Thread: Today's Gospel is difficult to appreciate without giving thought to the unwritten conversation amongst all the parties involved. Here's how the scene plays out in my head.
Throughout these moments, the Virgin maintains eye contact with her son. Remember, these two love each other deeply. It's perfect and pure intimacy. They also know each other extremely well, and, of course, he knows everything.
"They have no wine."
Our Lord looks at His mother and says: "Woman, what is it to Me and to thee? My hour has not yet come." He maintains eye contact. The title would have made it clear to her that this was a moment. She would have immediately begun to pray internally, as her Son watched her process what He had just said. Perhaps crooked an eyebrow with the combined glimmer of loving amusement in His eye, and compassion. Her prayer (and dialogue) in my mind's eye, went something like this (all while maintaining eye contact with her son).
Mary: "Why does He address me so?"
Holy Ghost: "He honors you Mary. He has given you a title, and He has allowed you to decide when His public ministry begins. Will it be now?"
Mary: "Such a title ..."
Holy Ghost: "Such a King!"
The Father: "Does the Mother of My Son consent to this sacrifice, as I have done?"
Mary: "Thy will be done." Still staring at her son, now with tears in her eyes, she says "Do whatever He tells you."
Our Lord smiles compassionately at His mother, feeling her pain, and obeys.
There's a lot more to those few sentences than meets the eye.
